Samsung Secret Diagnostic Code: *#0*#

Samsung Galaxy phones have a built-in hardware diagnostic tool that is faster and more reliable than a browser test because it bypasses the display driver entirely.

  1. 1.Open the Phone app and go to the dialler keypad.
  2. 2.Type *#0*# — the diagnostic screen opens automatically (do not press call).
  3. 3.Tap Red → inspect → Green → inspect → Blue → inspect → Black → inspect → White.
  4. 4.Any pixel that does not match the uniform colour is a defect.
  5. 5.Press the back button or Home to exit the diagnostic menu.

Note: Works on Galaxy S-series (S7+), Z Flip, and Z Fold. May not work on A-series or Xcover models.

How Samsung AMOLED Dead Pixels Differ from LCD

Samsung Dynamic AMOLED panels have self-emissive pixels — no backlight. Dead pixels on AMOLED are completely black (the organic emitter has failed). Stuck pixels are lit at the wrong colour. Both are visible, but stuck pixels are brighter and easier to spot on a black screen.

Samsung AMOLED screens can also exhibit burn-in — a faint ghost image from prolonged static content. This is different from a dead pixel — the affected area still functions, it just shows a residual image. Test on grey to distinguish burn-in from dead pixels.

Samsung Dead Pixel Policy

Samsung's published threshold for Super AMOLED is 3 or more dead pixels for guaranteed warranty replacement. However, this is the minimum — Samsung customer service often replaces devices with a single dead pixel reported within the first few weeks. Within 14 days of purchase, contact the retailer directly rather than Samsung — most retailers will exchange immediately for any defect. See the full Samsung warranty guide.

Foldable Phone Dead Pixels — Z Flip and Z Fold

Z Flip and Z Fold screens flex thousands of times — this creates mechanical stress at the fold crease. Dead pixels near the crease that appear without a visible drop or impact are often covered under warranty. Report them as soon as they appear and photograph them before handling. See Z Flip guide and Z Fold guide for model-specific details.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Samsung dead pixel test code?

Dial *#0*# in the Samsung Phone app dialler. The hardware diagnostic screen opens automatically. Tap Red, Green, Blue, Black, White in sequence to test the display.

Does *#0*# work on all Samsung phones?

It works on most Galaxy S-series (S7 and later), Z Flip, and Z Fold phones. It may not work on A-series budget models or very old devices. If it does not open, use this browser test instead.

How many dead pixels does Samsung require for warranty?

Samsung's published policy for Super AMOLED requires 3 or more dead pixels for a guaranteed replacement. However, 1 dead pixel on a new phone is often replaced if reported quickly (within 14 days of purchase, contact the retailer — they typically exchange immediately).

Are foldable Samsung Z Flip dead pixels covered?

Dead pixels near the fold crease that appear without physical damage are often covered, as Samsung recognises the crease as a mechanical stress point. Document the issue immediately — claims made 3+ months after purchase face more scrutiny.

What is a stuck pixel on Samsung AMOLED?

A stuck pixel on AMOLED is one that is lit at the wrong colour — it cannot turn off. This appears as a bright coloured dot on a black screen. True dead pixels stay dark on all colours.

Can I fix a stuck pixel on a Samsung phone?

Sometimes. Run the fix tool for 10–20 minutes — rapid colour cycling can revive stuck sub-pixels on AMOLED. True dead pixels (black on all colours) cannot be fixed with software.
