Both use Super Retina OLED — same panel tech as iPhone X, improved colour accuracy.
iPhone XS Dead Pixel — OLED Behaviour
The iPhone XS uses OLED — every pixel generates its own light. This means:
- True dead pixels are completely black because the organic emitter has failed. Most visible on white or bright backgrounds. Cannot be fixed by software.
- Stuck sub-pixels appear as a bright coloured dot (red, green, or blue) on a black background. These may respond to the rapid cycling fix tool.
- Disable True Tone and Night Shift before testing — both shift colour temperature and can disguise faint defects.
iPhone XS Warranty and Repair Options
The iPhone XS launched in 2018. All units are well outside the 1-year standard warranty. Options for a dead pixel on an out-of-warranty iPhone XS:
- Apple out-of-warranty screen repair: approximately $279 (XS) / $329 (XS Max)
- Third-party repair: approximately $120–$200 — quality varies significantly
- Check credit card phone protection or renters/home insurance before paying out-of-pocket
- Compare repair cost vs. trade-in reduction — for a device this age, trade-in and upgrade may be more economical
